Our Story
THE ORIGIN TRUTH: WHY WE EXIST
Unemployment continues to relentlessly plague the youth of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country of nearly 105 million people, with 46 million between 15-35 years old. Living conditions are becoming increasingly unbearable with 7 out of 10 unable to find formal jobs. Many turn to informal survival activities; others fall into drug abuse, unwanted pregnancies, and even join rebel groups—decisions that threaten national and regional peacebuilding efforts.
While getting jobs is nearly impossible in DRC, Climate change is exacerbating the crises. Extreme sunstroke, excessive but unproductive rainfall, pollution, etc. impoverish the soil. As a result, production decreases, agricultural initiatives collapse, and more youth lose hope and jobs. Many young people attempt entrepreneurship, but without support, most ventures fail within five years. According to the World Bank, over 90% of grassroots initiatives never make it past this milestone. Why? Lack of funding, weak teams, poor guidance, and the absence of systems that believe in and invest in them. Some youths still depend on the Government and Parents, both of which have desperately failed to create opportunities for them. Challenging this status quo has become the work for heroes!
Why Are Environment and Jobs One Fight in WAZA GREEN?
Too often, entrepreneurship programs push for profit over the planet. At the same time, many environmental initiatives aim to protect nature but forget the local people who live in it and who are supposed to sustain the change. We believe that climate and social issues are interconnected and so must be the solutions. In a country where the majority of youth are unemployed and the planet is breaking under pollution, real change must tackle both crises as one. Every plastic bottle not recycled is a “missed income" beyond being a waste problem. Every untapped solar panel is not just lost energy but also it's a lost job. Every broken irrigation canal is unsafe for plants as well as for the future of families.
So, Green entrepreneurship, is our philosophy, is the space where climate solutions become job creators. It is where young people not only clean their communities but also earn from it. Environmental action that doesn’t create employment is not sustainable — and employment that destroys the environment is not progress.
WHAT WE BELIEVE IN
- We believe that climate action is strongest when it uplifts people, and economic innovation is most powerful when it restores the earth, and we call it Green Entrepreneurship.
- At Waza Green, Environmental action without sustainability is vanity. Social action without environmental impact is vanity. We refuse to choose one or the other.
- We believe that young people can build socially impactful, financially sustainable, and environmentally powerful ventures — even in the toughest countries like DRC.
- We believe in deep-rooted enterprises: businesses that don’t just survive, but stand the test of time, because they are rooted in community, guided by purpose, and built with mutual benefit.
- We believe in youth co-creating solutions together with WAZA GREEN in building strong, passionate teams, learning by doing, and growing systems that eventually run themselves.
